As of April 1, 2026, post\u2011secondary international students will no longer need a separate co\u2011op work permit to complete required work placements, including co\u2011ops, internships, practicums, and similar placements that form part of an academic program. This change applies to students enrolled in eligible colleges, universities, and other post\u2011secondary institutions.<\/p>\n

Until now, many students were required to apply for an additional co\u2011op work permit before starting a mandatory placement. Beginning in April 2026, eligible students will be able to complete required placements under their\u00a0study permit alone, provided they continue to meet all study permit conditions.<\/p>\n

It is important to note that this change does not remove all work\u2011related rules. Students must remain actively enrolled in their program and in good academic standing, and the work placement must be connected to their studies. Jobs or internships that are\u00a0not part of a program requirement\u00a0are still subject to Canada\u2019s regular on\u2011campus and off\u2011campus work rules.<\/p>\n

This policy change is a welcome development for international students, making it easier to gain Canadian work experience and reducing administrative barriers during their studies.
