The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program (OINP) continues to evolve as it strives to meet the province’s economic and labor market needs. Recent changes and updates to the program reflect Ontario’s commitment to attracting skilled workers, addressing labor shortages, and enhancing the overall effectiveness of the immigration process. <\/span><\/p>\n

This article will discuss significant developments in the OINP, including the conclusion of the Entrepreneur program at the end of 2023, the increased allocation of nominations for 2024, the expansion of the In-Demand Skills stream, and a summary of the draws and categories for the first half of 2024.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

End of the Entrepreneur Stream<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

On February 5, 2024, the OINP announced that they had suspended the Entrepreneur Stream on December 4, 2024. Despite Ontario\u2019s stated commitment to using the OINP to meet ongoing labour market needs, there have been no announcements or commitments from the OINP with regards to future programs for Entrepreneurs.\u00a0 All updates discussed in this article can be found on the OINP Program Updates Page here: <\/span>https:\/\/www.ontario.ca\/page\/2024-ontario-immigrant-nominee-program-updates<\/span><\/a>\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The OINP\u2019s 2024 Allocation\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

On April 5, 2024, the OINP confirmed that Ontario\u2019s allocation for 2024 is 21,500 nominations. This allocation reflects a significant increase from 2023\u2019s allocation of 16,500 nomination. This increase in nominations was widely anticipated following the November 2023 meeting of the Forum Ministers Responsible for Immigration where most Provincial ministers advocated for increased allocations and control over their respective nomination programs.\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Expansion of the In-Demand Skills Stream<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

On July 5, 2024, the OINP announced a largescale expansion to the Employer Job Offer: In-Demand Skills stream by adding 35 occupations to the list of eligible occupations in the program. 34 of these occupations are for positions that will be locate outside of the Greater Toronto Area and 1 occupation can be used for positions located anywhere in Ontario.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The newly included occupations span various industries, highlighting Ontario’s commitment to addressing diverse economic demands. Key additions include roles in the construction, agriculture, manufacturing, and health sectors. These sectors have been identified as having persistent labor shortages, and the inclusion of these occupations is expected to help alleviate these challenges.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                        Final Thoughts<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n

                                                                        The Ontario Immigrant Nominee Program has undergone several notable changes in the first half of 2024, reflecting broader trends and priorities in Canadian immigration policy. The cessation of the Entrepreneur program in in keeping with broader restrictions on entrepreneur programs (see the pause of Self-Employer Persons applications and caps imposed for Start Up Visa applications), while the increased allocation of nominations and the expansion of the In-Demand Skills stream signal Ontario’s commitment to addressing labor market needs and economic development.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

                                                                        Looking ahead, I hope to see more general draws in the Employer Job Offer streams, providing greater access for employers and candidates alike. Additionally, it would be beneficial to have more draws in the Express Entry Skilled Trades program to address ongoing labor shortages in the trades industry. Lastly, a plan to launch a new, more efficient Entrepreneur program would be a welcome development, ensuring that Ontario remains an attractive destination for entrepreneurial talent from around the world.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
