Privacy Policy & Cookies Notice


This Policy relates to our privacy practices in connection with our website, (the “Site”). It does not describe information collection practices in relation to other websites, including those linked to or from the Site.

Your privacy is important to us, and our policy is simple. The Canadian Immigration Lawyers Association (“CILA”) does not collect any personal information about you when you visit the Site unless you specifically choose to provide that information. Please do not provide any personal information to CILA if you do not consent to the collection, use and disclosure of your personal information in accordance with this Policy.


CILA does not collect any personal information about you other than that which you provide voluntarily. We retain information provided to us by you in connection with your application for membership or to donate funds to our organization. Information provided by you is used solely for the purpose for which it is intended. Such information is not shared with any third party for commercial purposes.


We collect information when a person voluntarily completes an online membership application form or other application form or inputs their information in the lawyer directory. We collect, use or disclose this information in a manner consistent with this Policy. We also collect email addresses during the online membership application process, but you may indicate that you do not wish to receive unsolicited electronic communications from us. We comply with all federal and provincial Anti-Spam laws and regulations including Canada’s anti-spam legislation.  


The server on which the Site is located collects and saves only the default information normally provided by web server software. Such information may include the originating IP address, the date and time of your visit, the web pages visited on our Site and documents downloaded from it. If enabled by your web browser, the Site will place “cookies” (simple text files) on your computer so that the Site can remember you on subsequent visits. You may disable the ability of your computer to receive “cookies”; however, adjusting these settings may limit your access to certain features or content on our Site.

CILA will make no attempt to identify individual visitors to the Site or associate the technical information referred to above with any individual.

This information is used only for statistical and administrative purposes and to assist the Association in making enhancements to the visitors’ experience with the Site.

Types of cookies:

  • Essential cookies – necessary for functionality of website
  • Analytical/Performance cookies – collect info about how visitors use the website
  • Functionality cookies – enable additional functionalities like language/preferences
  • Targeting/advertising – used by third partied for marketing purposes for personalized content



CILA members are automatically added to the CILA list serve. By becoming a CILA member you consent to receiving electronic messages through the CILA list-serve. Any information posted to the CILA list serve can be seen by anyone on that list. Items posted to the CILA list serve can be read by the entire membership and our list serve administrators. While our list serve has guidelines for use, CILA does not control what other users may do with information posted or otherwise emailed.

If you wish to opt out of the CILA list serve, you may contact and request to be excluded from the CILA list serve.


CILA may also receive information about you from social media platforms including but not limited to when you interact with us on those platforms or access our social media content. The information we may receive is governed by the privacy settings, policies, and/or procedures of the applicable social media platform, and we encourage you to review them.


This Policy is in effect as of the date of it’s publication on the Association’s website. From time to time, we may modify this Policy. We reserve the right to alter this Policy, and any of our policies or procedures regarding the handling of Personal Information at any time, without any prior notice.
